Brakes
The brake system of any type of vehicle is important. It is responsible for slowing and stopping the momentum of your car's wheels through use of your brake pedal.
How Your BMW Brakes Work
Brakes consist of three major parts. The brake pads, calipers, and the brake rotors. All three work together to stop your vehicle once the brake pedal is compressed by the driver. When the pedal is engaged, brake fluid is flushed, or compressed down a series of brake lines connected to the caliper assembly. The calipers use a piston, which when pressurized, press the brake pads into the surface of the rotors behind the wheels. The heat and friction created against the rotors slow and stop the car's momentum.
Signs of Bad Car Brakes
Your brake parts will see normal wear and tear over the years. Usually after 40,000 miles hits the odometer, it is wise to have a professionally technician conduct an inspection. You may notice grinding or screeching noises, thinning brake pads, scraped or gouged rotors, or leaking brake rotors.
