When the pedal is engaged, brake fluid is flushed, or compressed down a series of brake lines connected to the caliper assembly. The calipers use a piston, which when pressurized, press the brake pads into the surface of the rotors behind the wheels.The heat and friction created against the rotors slow and stop the car's momentum.
