Brake Rotors

One of the main parts of your disc braking system are the disc rotors. Located directly behind your car's wheels, they are the metallic cylinder in which your brake pads grip to in order to stop the momentum of your car, truck or SUV.

How Brake Rotors Work on a BMW

The braking process of any car involves the compression of the brake pedal. From here, brake fluid is pumped or hydraulically pressurized into your calipers which compress the attached brake pads forward into the rotor discs. The friction causes the rotor, which is attached to the wheel to slow and eventually stop.

How Long do Brake Rotors Last?

Brake rotors can last beyond 80,000 miles. But this depends on your driving style and the roads you commute on daily. Rotors should be inspected after 40,000 for quality. One of the key factors that determine the functionality of brake rotors is their ability to dissipate heat. As the brake pads rub against the rotor, they generate a tremendous amount of heat, which can cause the rotor to warp, crack or even fail.

To prevent this, brake rotors are designed with a specific cooling system that can help to dissipate the heat generated during braking. This can take the form drilled holes, slots, or slots and holes combined which help to increase the surface area of the rotor and improve its ability to disperse heat.

The material used to make the brake rotors can also affect their performance. Cast iron is a common material used for rotors, but some high-performance vehicles may use carbon-ceramic rotors for their superior heat resistance and durability.

If you notice any damages on your rotor discs, seek an inspection from a certified BMW technician. Changing them early on when noticing damages can save you from costly brake repairs down the road.
