Organic brake pads usually contain materials such as rubber, Kevlar, and carbon fiber, while metallic pads are made of sintered metal particles mixed with fillers and resins. Ceramic pads are another type of brake pad that utilizes a mix of ceramic fibers and nonferrous metal fibers to provide superior stopping power and durability.

When the brake pedal is pressed, the brake caliper pushes the brake pads onto the rotor or drum, creating friction that slows the wheel's momentum. The heat created dissipates through the brake rotor, and the vehicle gradually slows down or comes to a complete stop.

Signs of Failing Brake Pads

The design and composition of brake pads are critical factors that affect the performance of the braking system, including stopping power, noise, wear, and fade resistance. Brake pads of all different materials wear at different times, and the common sign for replacement is pad thinness.
